The best beaches in Costa Rica – Top 5

The best beaches in Costa Rica – how to choose them? You know that Costa Rica is a real paradise, but do you know that it is also a great country for a beach holiday? In the country you will find nearly 300 beautiful beaches, each of which is unique and different from the previous one. Regardless of which side of the country you are on, you will certainly find beautiful beaches to discover.

Interestingly, on the beaches of Costa Rica, the sand can be white, black or brown. And you can even find a beach where “sand” is millions of crushed sea shells! The structure itself can also be very different – from compacted like concrete, to fluffy like whipped cream. Each beach is different here and it’s worth seeing them all.

It is difficult to choose the “best” beaches, but we have a small guide for you. Today we will try to collect a few beaches that may appear to be the prettiest, but it is true that each of you will have their own list after visiting Costa Rica.

5. Beach with “windows” – Playa Ventanas

One of the reasons why visitors fall in love with the Costa Ballena region is because you can find a lot of beautiful places here. In addition, there will be no crowds of people here. The city of Uvita is also a very good place for whale watching.

And right here, near Ojochal, is one of these secluded beaches, Playa Ventanas. The name comes from the caves on the beach, which look like small windows through which you can watch the ocean and even go inside! You can immediately see why the locals love this place. The beach lies in a secluded small bay and is surrounded by rainforest. The waves here are calm and safe for swimming.

The beach has a protected and paid parking lot where you can leave your car. You will also find local sellers where you can get drinks and snacks. It is a very good place to spend time with family.

4. The beach in Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica’s gems that is definitely worth visiting. There is a national park here, where you can meet amazing flora and fauna, as well as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. At Manuel Antonio you will find a charming combination of tropical forests, beaches and coral reefs. These beaches are among the most beautiful in the country, and snorkeling here is also perfect. In the forest live sloths, iguanas, rare and cute squirrel monkeys, white-faced monkeys and millions of colorful little crabs. The trail around Punta Catedral offers spectacular views. The park is easily accessible, south of the city of Quepos, and is close to a large selection of hotels and restaurants.

If you do not want to explore the national park, then you can spend a nice time on the white beach without entering the park. Standing with your feet in the light sand and watching the tide crash into the rocks on both sides of the lagoon, it’s easy way to believe you’re in paradise. On site you will find parking and shops with drinks and snacks. You will also find several restaurants nearby.

3. Beach for surfers – Santa Teresa and Mal Pais

If you are a surfer, you should definitely visit Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. This place is favored by surfers from around the world who come here in the season to surf the perfect waves. Mal Pais is a small town on the Nicoya peninsula. The city was a fishing village, which in recent years has gained immense popularity as one of the best places for surfers. Even Forbes magazine recognized the beach at Mal Pais as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The waves in Mal Pais can reach up to several meters in the season. However, you can try surfing even if you haven’t done it before. If you’ve never tried surfing before, then local surf schools will be happy to teach you the basics and show you where you can safely practice your new hobby.

Due to the location, the journey will require several hours of driving, but it is definitely worth it. On the city you’ll find hotels and restaurants, as well as shops.

2. White beach in Puerto Viejo

This time the beach from the second part of Costa Rica, i.e. from the Caribbean coast. As you will see, this place is slightly different from the Pacific coast. In this part of Costa Rica it rains much more often, which makes the rainforests in the National Parks of Cahuita and Manzanillo extremely lush. The beaches are clear or even white, and the Caribbean water is clean and warm. Puerto Viejo with light blue waters, a beautiful view of the coast and a very local atmosphere is a must for anyone who wants to get away from the crowds. Here you can also try surfing!

There should be no problem finding accommodation, but remember that in high season all hotels can fill up quickly. In the area you will find many interesting restaurants with local, but also with European food.

1. Beach in Guanacaste – Playa Naranjo

Guanacaste is the driest and hotest region in Costa Rica. However, here you will also find many beautiful beaches. We chose this beach for this set. It is located near the Santa Rosa National Park, which is the oldest park in Costa Rica, since it was founded in 1791. In this park you will find a great opportunity to see animals and plants in their natural environment.

Naranjo beach has white sand which makes it a pearl of the Papagayo bay. It’s exceptionally clean and quiet, where you won’t see many tourists. If you dream about a beach just for yourself, then Naranjo beach may be the right choice.

If you are going to a less frequented beach, remember to bring water and food with you. It is equally important to refuel the car before leaving. You don’t want to march a few kilometers for fuel…
