Diving in Costa Rica is a great way to spend a vacation and explore the underwater world. Costa Rica, despite its small size, boasts a huge variety of animal and plant species. This applies not only to land, but also to underwater parts. The richness of marine life on coral reefs matches the vibrant tropical jungle. All this makes diving in Costa Rica a great adventure even for beginners who have never thought about diving before.
Costa Rica lies between two large water bodies. From the east it is the Caribbean Sea, and from the west it is the Pacific Ocean, or the Pacific. Diving can be done all year round on both sides of the country, but the Pacific side is considered to be much better than the Caribbean. It is on the side of the Pacific Ocean that you can find the two biggest attractions, namely Coconut Island and El Caño Island.
Cocos Island National Park is located 550 km from the Costa Rica. It is the only island in the Eastern Pacific Ocean that is overgrown with tropical rainforest. The underwater world of Cocos Island is famous for its exceptional wealth of life, and the island’s surroundings are considered one of the best places in the world to watch large sea creatures such as sharks, rays, tuna and dolphins. Cocos Island was proclaimed a Costa Rican National Park by an executive decree in 1978, and in 1997 was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/820/) Due to their remoteness from the mainland and strict protection, trips to the Coconut Island take several days and must be booked well in advance.
Another highly recommended dive site is the island of El Caño, which lies off the coast of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean. It is 20 km northwest of the Osa Peninsula, which belongs to the province of Puntarenas. The area of the island was used by pre-Columbian residents as a cemetery, making it currently an extremely important place from the point of view of archeology. It was among others here that stone balls carved by early settlers were found.
Due to the diversity of species of fauna and flora as well as crystal clear water and the occurrence of coral reefs, this place is extremely valued by divers and people practicing snorkeling. Due to the great diversity, this place is perfect for beginners and more advanced divers. Wonderful specimens can already be seen from the water surface, and the diving itself is the most interesting at a depth of 10 to 30 meters, where visibility reaches up to 30-40 meters.

Remember that this sport is accessible to everyone and everyone can try their hand. Under the water, the boundary of the impossible blur, and even people with disabilities are great at diving.
